Guilford is proud to be officially recognized as both the Chickadee and Lilac Capital of Maine. We are grateful to the Maine legislature for recognizing the long tradition of the Town’s inhabitants of fostering and caring for the pristine natural environment within our town.

From the official records of the State of Maine:
“(1-19)  the Town of Guilford which has demonstrated extensive efforts to promote its natural resources and to create green economic opportunities, beautification and recreation.  Through the consistent and dedicated efforts of the Economic Development Board and the town government, lilac trees of many varieties have been planted on town-owned sites, revitalizing and beautifying the community.  The lilacs attract a large population of native Black Capped Chickadees and Guilford now calls itself “The Lilac and Chickadee Capital of Maine.”  We acknowledge the efforts of the Town of Guilford in improving and maintaining its beauty;”
